October has been an eventful month for my team. We have met up with three tertiary Psychology clubs, namely the Murdoch Psychology Society Singapore (MPSS), NUS Psychology Society, and SIM Psychology Society (SIM PsySoc) to provide outreach into the community, raising the awareness that mental health is just as important as physical health. In addition, we are also working with the Singapore Psychology Society’s Aspiring Professional Special Interests Group (SIG) to see how we could collaborate to bring quality programmes to students and members of the public.
This year, we will be having our first major course – The Graduate Certificate in Psychotherapeutic Approaches (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). CBT provides a good solid psychotherapy foundation for Psychology Graduates (people with a bachelor degree in Psychology) to start practicing clinical with their clients. Armed with CBT, graduates may proceed to further their psychotherapy expertise in the area of ACT, DBT, and / or MCBT.
We are planning for more ACA On-going Professional Development (OPD) accredited workshops (e.g. Group Psychotherapy) in 2019 to cater to the needs of students and members of the public.

October 2018 Rumblings
The Lion Mind Counselling Centre was officially launched on 10th September 2018. We were blessed with many people coming to us for help. There were support from Psychologists who came for our public workshops. Certified MSA Therapists from Indonesia also came down to congratulate us on our opening.
We are working closely with the Association of Psychotherapists And Counsellors (Singapore) (APACS) to bring quality clinical courses. These courses are designed for Psychology (degree and diploma) graduates to gain the necessary skill sets to work as a Psychotherapist (with APACS membership).

Why seek professional treatment when I can find my besties to talk to?
Seeing a mental health professional can help you restructure your thinking process, trace back the roots of your issues, deconstruct your faulty cognitive beliefs and rebuilt them. Psychotherapy/counselling services provided by these professionals are evidence-based (scientific).
Psychologists and counsellors are bounded by their ethics to provide you with any bits of advice. Instead, they guide you to seek answers. While they are the experts in using psychotherapy to assist you, you are your own subject matter experts.
Advice from friends may sometimes not work for you. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to the exact same problem 2 different individuals may face. While it is free, sometimes these advices (although with good intentions) may harm you more than they could help you.
Mental health professionals (e.g counsellor, psychologists) are obliged to keep your case confidential with exception to the court order (normally for criminal cases).
A similar parallel case would be to self-medicate instead of seeing your doctor – although you may recover from your mild physical illness, many times the illness become worse instead.
