What is counselling?
Counselling is a process that focuses on enhancing the psychological well-being of an individual. Coming for counselling allows an individual to reach his full potential and live an enriching life.
Who is counselling for?
A common misconception about counselling is that only people with severe mental health issues need counselling. In reality, many people who attend counselling are bright and stable individuals who are looking for solutions to everyday issues like stress and relationship problems.
Are all counselling session confidential?
Yes. All information and written records disclosed within the counselling session and pertaining to the session is confidential and may not be revealed without expressed written consent. Except for when it is required by the law or if you were to pose a danger to yourself or others, in which case the relevant parties would be notified.
What should I expect for the first session?
Generally, your first session will be used as a consultation to find out more about you, rather than for treatment. This allows you to identify your issues as you see them, and for our clinicians to start to gain an idea of what your needs are.
How long do I need to see a Counsellor for?
There is no fixed number of sessions that you need to see the Counsellor for. The treatment period varies from person to person depending on factors such as your progress and the observations of the Counsellor. In general, the first few sessions will be weekly and subsequent session’s frequency will be based on your Counsellor’s recommendation.
How much does the counselling session cost?
Each session lasts between 40 to 50 minutes and costs $100 per session.
Do you prescribe mediation?
No, we do not prescribe medication as we do not have an in-house psychiatrist at The Lion Mind. As only a psychiatrist can prescribe medication.
What counselling modality is used?
We use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with Person-centred Approaches. CBT is a goal oriented treatment that takes on a hands-on approach to problem solving. Its goal is to change patterns of thinking or behavior behind people’s problems. In studies, CBT stands out as the most effective treatment for numerous mental health issues, are usually of shorter duration, and the results are more enduring than those of other treatment methods.
Is counselling for life?
No, counselling is not for life. The aim of counselling is to help clients overcome their existing issues. Once the issue has been resolved (coped), you can request your clinician to bring a closure to the treatment plan.
What is a Counsellor, Psychotherapist, Psychologist, and / or Psychiatrist?
A Counsellor is trained in the art of providing counselling and psychotherapy services to client. Most Counsellors in Singapore have a Master’s degree in counselling. While Counsellors usually have knowledge in Psychology, a bachelor’s degree in Psychology is not a prerequisite to be a Counsellor.
A Psychotherapist is someone who has specialized postgraduate training in a specific psychotherapy skill set such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), art therapy, play therapy, etc, but may not have a Master’s degree in counselling.
A Psychologist is trained in the science of psychology to provide evidence-based psychotherapy and psychological assessment(s) to client. Most Psychologists in Singapore have the minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Psychology followed by a master’s degree in Applied Psychology (e.g. clinical, counselling). Psychologists are unable to prescribe medication as they do not have a medical degree but may work closely with a Psychiatrist to provide the necessary patient care.
Counsellors, Psychotherapist and Psychologists are people who treats mental health disorders by psychological rather than medical means.
A Psychiatrist a medical doctor with an advance training in psychiatric medication. Psychiatrists can diagnose mental health disorders and prescribe psychiatric medication. In Singapore, Psychiatrists work closely with Psychologists to provide the optimal mental health treatment plan for clients.
What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
Counselling is generally used to describe a relatively brief treatment that is focused mostly upon behavior. It predominantly targets a specific symptom or problematic situation and fosters awareness and discernment for dealing with it. Counselling tends to be wellness-based and provides increased insight and learning in order to overcome problems and challenges.
Psychotherapy is often treatment-based to address mental health issues such as mood disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders etc. It can be used in tandem with medication but this isn’t always the case. Psychotherapy focuses on gaining insight into chronic physical and emotional problems. Its focus is on the client’s thought processes and way of being in the world, rather than specific problems.
However, generally, psychotherapy is conducted by professionals trained to practice psychotherapy such as registered Psychologists, Social Workers, or Psychotherapists. While a Psychotherapist is qualified to provide counselling services, a Counsellor may or may not have the training and skills to provide psychotherapy.
